Zsófia Bognár is a PhD student at the ELTE Department of Ethology and a member of the MTA-ELTE Lendület “Momentum” Companion Animal Research Group. She joined to the department as a first-year university student in 2013 and was one of the key people in the Cognitive Aging ERC grant (Senior Family Dog Program) between 2016-2021. Her supervisor is Dr Enikő Kubinyi since 2013.

Her main field of research is the relationship between head shape and behaviour in dogs. She is looking for the answer to the question of why the popularity of brachycephalism (flat face) increases among pet dogs despite their health issues. An interview with the topic was published in Hungarian on the website 24.hu. She also studies the cognitive ageing of dogs.

She participated in the Students’ Scientific Conference (i.e. TDK; a student competition with scientific theses and presentations) as both a BSc and an MSc student. In 2016, she received an audience award at the institutional TDK, and she achieved 2nd place at the national TDK in 2017. In 2019, she won 1st place and received an audience award at the institutional TDK, and she won 1st place at the national TDK in 2021. So far, her performance has been recognized with a total of 14 awards and 11 scholarships. As the most significant recognition of her scientific achievements, she received the Pro Scientia Gold Medal in 2021 and was also awarded the title of Young Behavioural Researcher of the Year by the Hungarian Ethology Society. In 2023, she got on the Forbes Hungary 30 Under 30 List in the Science category. The interview conducted with her can be read in Hungarian on the Forbes website.

She has so far produced 9 refereed publications from her research (4 first-authorship), with a total of 147 citations. Her first first-author publication was published during her BSc studies. Her first-author study published in 2021 attracted considerable international attention, received more media references than 95% of all scientific articles, and the number of downloads exceeded 74.000 (Altmetric score 610). The research was also reported by the Daily MailNBC News and The Times. Zsófia has also presented her results at numerous Hungarian and international conferences.

She also won the ELTE ÚNKP Science Communication Competition in video and meme category several times. In 2022, she created a popular science video series about the work of the ELTE Department of Ethology with Rita Lenkei, Ádám Leéb, Tamás Faragó and Enikő Kubinyi. She was one of the writers and hosts of the series, the editor, and also the cinematographer of some scenes.
